No Wonder You're Single! is the fifth episode of Survivor: Japan - Civil War.

Previously on Survivor...

At Ashikaga, Bryce questioned the wisdom in voting out Lawrence and giving Patton more power in the tribe. Landon assured him that Patton would be the next to go.

At Kamakura, John approached Lisa and Emma about splitting votes between Dave and Chuck to flush out their idol, which the women both considered. Kamakura then came from behind to win the reward challenge, but an argument ensued between Katie and Emma over the tribe's addition of fish to their diet. This led Reyna and Lisa to question whether or not the women's alliance would work.

At Ashikaga, a storm ruined the shelter, leaving the downtrodden tribe even more impoverished than before. Landon got Bryce to stick a rock in his pocket to make Patton think he had the idol, which worked. Feeling threatened, Patton tried to convince the tribe to split votes at their next tribal council in order to flush it out. However, he was unaware of the fact that the tribe was plotting against him.

After Kamakura won immunity, the tribe, minus Patton, agreed to make Kyle the new daimyo after Patton was voted out. At tribal council, Landon's ejection from the immunity challenge for tripping John was the main topic of discussion, but he received no votes as Patton was blindsided in a 6-2 vote.

Fifteen are left. Who will be voted out next?

Reward Challenge: One player lies on a "cradle" suspended by bungee ropes. The rest of the tribe use these ropes to spin the player on the cradle around a boxlike structure to pick up fifteen numbered flags, one at a time, and place them in the corresponding holders.

Reward: First place wins steaks, vegetables, spices, and a bottle of wine. Second place wins a bottle of wine.

Immunity Challenge: Two members of each tribe will run out into the jungle to collect paddles. Once all of them have been collected, they will return and give the paddles to three other members of the tribe, who will then row to a small island and race to their tribe's flag.

Night 10

Ashikaga, now whittled down to six people, returns to camp. It is raining lightly, meaning that the torches are barely lit and the fire outside the shelter has been extinguished.

Kyle: Well, at least things are starting to look up for us. Those last two challenges were really close. I think we have a good chance of winning now.

Kyle is now the third daimyo this tribe has had since this game began. Now that we're rid of most of our weaker challenge performers, It's possible that we'll finally start winning challenges. Even if that's not the case, Kyle's got two votes now, so my alliance has a majority. We can get rid of Phoebe and Shannon next if necessary.

Shannon quickly pulls Phoebe aside so they can talk away from the others.

Shannon: We're at a disadvantage right now. Kyle's got a second vote, which gives his alliance four total. Now that Bryce no longer has Patton to vote for, I have no idea what he's going to do.

Phoebe: Don't worry about that; we've got the idol, remember? All we need to do is play the idol. They don't have enough votes to split and ensure that one of us goes home.

Shannon: But what if we play the idol for the wrong person? We can easily end up playing the idol incorrectly. What if they target you next, but I end up playing it instead?

Phoebe: That's the only hard part to this. But if we play the idol right, we can get Kyle out, one of us will become the daimyo, and we'll have an advantage.

I think all the losing has gotten to Shannon. She was really pessimistic after tribal council tonight even though Kyle's alliance is playing right into our hands.

Meanwhile, Bryce is pleased to be rid of Patton.

Bryce: Man, I am so glad we finally voted out Patton.

Landon: I'm with you on that. Maybe now with another new leader we can actually win some challenges.

I'm glad Kyle, Landon, and Hannah finally helped to get rid of Patton, but if we keep losing challenges, Kyle should be the next to go. The problem is that now he's in the majority thanks to that second vote. I'll have to convince Landon or Hannah to jump ship.

Day 11

In the morning, while the rest of the tribe is doing chores around camp, Katie and Lisa go collect tree mail.

Lisa: Are you sure the women's alliance is going to work?

Katie: I have faith in it. A women's alliance can dominate a game when done right.

I'm not worried about the women not getting along. You don't need to be friends with people in order to be in an alliance with them. You just need a common goal. You can get rid of the people you don't like once everyone else is out of the way.

Lisa: Who do you think should be the next to go?

Katie: Probably Chuck. The merge probably isn't that far off, and when it comes he'll be a physical threat. We can probably get rid of Dave, John, and Patrick whenever we want since they're good in challenges, but not great.

Lisa: This is something we'll have to take up with Donna.

Katie and Lisa return with tree mail, which they read to the tribe upon returning to the shelter. The Kamakura tribe then heads out for the reward challenge.

Reward Challenge

Jeff Probst: Come on in, guys!

The Ashikaga tribe enters the jungle clearing, and looks visibly perplexed by the third set of challenge equipment.

Jeff Probst: Kamakura, get your first look at the new Ashikaga tribe. Patton was voted out at last night's tribal council.

John: If you guys can't settle on a daimyo, I'd be happy to volunteer.

Landon flips him off in reply without even bothering to look at him.

Kyle: I'm the new daimyo of this tribe.

Jeff Probst: We'll see how long that lasts. Before we get to today's challenge, each of you pick an egg.

Jeff passes around a crate of eggs and lets the castaways each pick one. The castaways who have followed the show for a while exchange knowing looks, while the others frown in confusion. They crush their selected eggs on Jeff's command once they've all picked one, and find that they are each filled with paint of a certain color. Chuck, Dave, John, Phoebe, and Shannon all picked eggs filled with black paint. Bryce, Hannah, Kyle, Lisa, and Patrick all picked eggs filled with teal paint. Donna, Emma, Katie, Landon, and Reyna all picked eggs full of purple paint.

Jeff Probst: Go to the mat of the color of the paint your egg was filed with if you're not there already.

The castaways all do as they're told, with Hannah giving Landon a worried look.

Jeff Probst: Now drop your buffs, because the tribes are now switched.

The castaways do as they are told as Jeff passes around new buffs for the castaways.

Jeff Probst: Chuck, you are the new daimyo of the Ashikaga tribe. Kyle, you are the new daimyo of the Kamakura tribe. And Donna, you are the daimyo of the Tokugawa tribe.

I'm so glad Dave and I are still on the same tribe. Even better: I'm the daimyo! We just need one of our new tribemates to join us and we have a majority!

I'm really worried about Landon right now. He's the only member of Ashikaga on the Tokugawa tribe, so if his tribe loses, he may be the next to go. He'd be another great player who got screwed by a tribe swap.

I'm still a daimyo. I just have a different tribe now. It's smaller, too, so that second vote is much more significant. Having most of my allies joining the tribe with me just makes it even better!

Jeff explains the rules of the challenge to the new tribes, then reveals that they are playing for steaks, vegetables, spices, and a bottle of wine. Whichever tribe finishes second gets a smaller bottle of wine as a consolation prize.

After a minute of strategizing, Ashikaga chooses Shannon to pick up the flags. Kamakura chooses Kyle for that task, while Reyna is assigned to the job for Tokugawa.

Jeff Probst: For reward! Survivors ready...go!

Ashikaga gets off to a quick start, with Shannon being the first to collect a flag. At the same time she places the first flag in its specified holder, Reyna picks up the first flag for Tokugawa. As Shannon picks up Ashikaga's second flag, Kyle picks up Kamakura's first.

The early part of the challenge unfolds in a similar fashion, with Ashikaga having collected six flags, Tokugawa five, and Kamakura four within the first few minutes. However, Tokugawa soon picks up steam, beating Ashikaga to ten. Kamakura all but falls out of the challenge when Kyle falls from the "cradle", and are three flags behind Tokugawa by the time the new tribe reaches ten.

Not giving up without a fight, Ashikaga picks up the pace and takes a 13-12 lead while Kamakura lags behind with just nine. A few minutes later, Ashikaga and Tokugawa are again tied at fourteen flags. On the next go-around, Shannon and Reyna both grab the final flags for their respective tribes at the same time, but Shannon places it in its specified holder a few seconds before Reyna does.

Jeff Probst: Ashikaga wins reward! Tokugawa comes in second, and wins a smaller reward!

The new Ashikaga celebrates, none louder than Phoebe and Shannon, who had never won a challenge before. The Tokugawa tribe just shrugs while the new Kamakura, especially Kyle, Bryce, and Hannah, look on dejectedly.

Kyle (to self): The losing never ends.

Jeff congratulates Ashikaga on its victory in the challenge, giving them their large reward and some flint in addition, as this is the first challenge the tribe has won. He also gives a bottle of wine and some flint to Tokugawa. He gives nothing to Kamakura and sends the three tribes on their way.

Yes! My tribe is finally winning challenges! I like my new tribemates so far. They're really helping to get this tribe off the ground.

Upon returning to camp, Chuck and Dave immediately get to work starting a fire with the tribe's newly-acquired flint while Phoebe and Shannon start seasoning the steaks. Once the fire starts and the steaks are seasoned, John starts to cook them.

John: Another day, another challenge won. Good work, guys.

Shannon: I'm just glad this tribe is finally winning something.

What better way to celebrate your tribe's first challenge win than with steak and wine? These guys are great, but they shouldn't get comfortable. They don't know Phoebe and I have an idol.

The transition from one tribe to another has been seamless so far. It'll be a while before we have to go to tribal council, but if and when that happens, The girls are going to be the first to go. Even if they somehow get John on their side, Chuck and I have an idol.

The tribe bonds over the steak and wine, saving the vegetables for later. After the meal is finished, Chuck and Dave go to collect firewood. As soon as they're gone, John takes the opportunity to strategize with the women.

John: Listen, Chuck and Dave are going to want you two gone if and when we ever go to tribal council. And they've got an idol.

Phoebe: You're sure?

John: Positive. I saw them find it just before we left for tribal council a few days ago. If we ever lose an immunity challenge, I'm on board with the two of you. Chuck and Dave are very dangerous players. Chuck's going to win a lot of individual challenges, and Dave's really smart.

Shannon: Who do you think we should vote out first?

Phoebe: I think it should be Dave. Dave will probably think we'll vote for Chuck since he's a physical threat. See, it's always important to be one step ahead of your opponent.

Dave may be smart, but Phoebe's even smarter. She's a genius! Hopefully she and Shannon will let me join a final three alliance.

The Tokugawa tribe paddles its canoe to the shore of their new camp. As soon as they get out of the canoe Donna orders the tribe to start building a shelter.

Donna: This shouldn't take too long. The shelter only needs room for five people.

Landon: I'll get some wood.

While Landon is collecting wood, he keeps an eye out for the hidden immunity idol, knowing he may need it in the very near future.

I'm the only former member of Ashikaga on my new tribe, so if we have to go to tribal council and I don't have the idol, I could be dead in the water. With luck, I'll be able to turn the women against each other so that I won't need the thing.

He does not immediately see it right away, and decides to focus primarily on the wood so as not to arouse any suspicions. Nobody suspects anything.

Hopefully, if the women get drunk on the wine, I'll be able to slip away from camp long enough to do a more thorough search for the idol.

Meanwhile, Katie pulls Donna aside to talk strategy.

Katie: So Landon's next?

Donna: I'm not so sure. He's pretty good in challenges, so we may need to keep him around. If we vote out one of our strongest people, this tribe could fail miserably and we may end up going into the merge with just three people in our alliance.

Katie: If it's not Landon, then who is it?

Donna: Probably Reyna. I don't trust Emma, but she's athletic. We need her for challenges. You and Reyna aren't as strong in challenges, to be perfectly honest, but I trust you more than I trust Reyna.

I'm surprised that Donna doesn't want to get rid of Landon at the first opportunity and keep her alliance together, but at the same time, Reyna was kind of condescending to me the other day, so if we go to tribal council and vote her out, I won't complain. Just as long as it isn't me.

A couple of hours later, the shelter is completed and the younger women decide to celebrate by drinking the wine they won as the second place tribe's reward. Landon does not participate due to being underage, and Donna stays out of it due to her affiliation with the Church of Mormon. However, when Emma takes the first sip, she spits it out in disgust.

Emma: Oh my god, this tastes like nail polish remover!

Reyna: Let me try it.

Reyna takes a sip of the wine and spits it out just like Emma did. She passes the bottle to Katie.

Reyna: (bleep), you're right. This is terrible!

Katie, however, happily takes a sip and pours some of the wine into her canteen.

Emma: Seriously?

Katie: Hey, I'm just glad to have something other than water to drink.

That bottle of wine is probably the worst reward ever. Katie's the only one who likes it, so now we may have to get rid of it.

When Katie puts down the bottle, Emma takes it and hides it in a crevice in a tree stump not far from the shelter, not wanting Katie to get drunk.

Emma: You suck.

Day 12

Bryce, Kyle, and Hannah all go fishing in the canoe as an excuse to talk strategy.

Bryce: So what's the plan?

Kyle: Right now, the original Kamakuras outnumber us, and it's not even close. We need to stick together and get rid of either Lisa or Patrick. If the upcoming challenge is any indication, we'll likely have to go to tribal at some point before the merge.

Hannah: Right now, it's pretty simple; we've got a numbers advantage. There really isn't a whole lot of strategy to worry about at the moment; we can just pick them off until it's just the three of us.

I still don't entirely trust Kyle, but at this point I don't think I have a choice. If we're down in the numbers when the merge comes around, we're screwed.

Meanwhile, at the shelter, Lisa and Patrick discuss their standing in the new tribe.

Patrick: It feels weird having half of the remaining original Ashikaga tribe over here. You think they're going to take us out?

Lisa: Most likely. It's possible that we could convince one or two of them to join us. Right now, I see two options; either we talk Kyle into voting out Bryce and Hannah, who are bigger threats than he is, or we talk Bryce and Hannah into voting out Kyle, so one of us can get that second vote and regain control of the tribe.

Patrick: Which do you think we should do?

Lisa: I don't know yet. For now, we just need to lay low and keep an eye out for opportunities to turn them against each other. Maybe we should also try to find the hidden immunity idol just in case.

I didn't think the women's alliance was the best position, but this is certainly a step down from that. I feel like I'm definitely on the chopping block now.

Patrick and Lisa split up and search for the idol, but both fail to find anything. When they return about half an hour later, the rest of the tribe has beaten them there.

Kyle: Don't worry; we haven't been able to find it, either. Someone probably beat us to it.

Patrick and Lisa are looking for the idol now. For the first time, I realized that somebody else probably already found it. If that's the case, we don't have much to worry about.

Night 12

While the rest of the tribe is by the campfire, cooking rice, Katie sneaks off to find the bottle of wine Emma hid. After a brief search, she finds it and sits down to drink the whole bottle. About an hour, she returns, visibly drunk, and accidentally runs into the shelter, knocking down part of the wall.

Landon: Katie, what the hell?!

Katie laughs hysterically.

Katie: You guys! Why did the chicken cross the road? Because he felt like it!

Katie continues to laugh hysterically at her own jokes, much to the chagrin of the rest of the tribe.

I was afraid something like this was going to happen. *sighs* Katie's so annoying. I can't stand her.

Suddenly, Katie throws her arms around Reyna's neck and leans against her.

Katie: Well hello there...

Reyna: Whoa! This just got really weird.

Reyna pushes Katie away while Landon, Emma, and Donna all look at each other nervously.

Landon: As annoying as this is, it'll probably be hilarious a few months down the road.

Katie's so drunk that she thinks she's a lesbian. She's going to end up with quite the hangover tomorrow morning, and that's really going to hurt us in the challenge.

Day 13

While collecting tree mail, Chuck and Dave discuss their situation on the new tribe.

Dave: You're the daimyo right now, so we've already got three votes. That's enough for at least a tie.

Chuck: Yeah. Do you think we should add one more just in case John's working with the women?

Dave: Absolutely. Except right now I'm not entirely sure whether I want to get rid of one of the women or John. Neither of the women are that good in challenges, but John tends to cause a lot of drama. Plus, he knows we have the idol, and has probably told the women by now. But if we win this challenge, we won't have to make that decision for a few more days. We'll be fine.

My initial plan was to vote out the women first. That would most likely ensure that Kamakura has a majority going into the merge. However, I'm strongly reconsidering that because John's a bit of a loose cannon. Besides, it's possible that the women have the idol, and we don't have enough votes to flush it out.

After Chuck and Dave collect the tree mail and read it aloud to their tribemates, they all head out to the immunity challenge.

Immunity Challenge

Jeff Probst: Come on in, guys!

All three tribes enter the challenge area. Jeff takes note of Katie massaging her head, visibly hung over. Jeff then takes the immunity idol from Kyle, and casts it aside. He then removes the covering from a small pedestal, revealing two new immunity immunity idols, one of average size and another designed very similarly, but with smaller dimensions. Jeff explains the challenge to the castaways and gives them a minute to strategize.

Paddle Collectors for Ashikaga: John, Phoebe

Paddle Collectors for Kamakura: Bryce, Kyle

Paddle Collectors for Tokugawa: Landon, Reyna

Rowers for Ashikaga: Chuck, Dave, Shannon

Rowers for Kamakura: Hannah, Lisa, Patrick

Rowers for Tokugawa: Donna, Emma, Katie

Jeff Probst: For immunity! Survivors ready...go!

All of the paddle collectors run into the jungle to find their tribes' three paddles. Bryce finds one for Kamakura easily enough, and Landon does likewise for Tokugawa shortly afterward. Ashikaga is held back when Phoebe gets lost while searching for a paddle. Kyle finds two paddles for Kamakura while Reyna finds a second paddle for Tokugawa. John finds all three of Ashikaga's paddles and soon meets back up with Phoebe. Landon finds the third and final paddle for Tokugawa, and all three tribes return around the same time, with Tokugawa being just seconds behind Kamakura.

Ashikaga breaks away once the paddling begins, thanks to Chuck's expertise at canoeing. Kamakura falls behind Ashikaga, but retains a steady pace. Tokugawa moves very slowly due largely to Katie's poor paddling while in the midst of her hangover. Ashikaga easily beats the other two tribes to the flag, winning the first immunity. Kamakura comes in second a few minutes later, with Tokugawa finishing nowhere close.

Once everyone from the three tribes has regrouped, the larger immunity idol is given to Ashikaga, and the smaller to Kamakura. Jeff reminds Tokugawa that they must attend tribal council that night. All three tribes disperse to their camps.

Katie really cost us the immunity challenge today. If the others have their heads screwed on straight, she'll be going home tonight.

Once the Tokugawa tribe returns to camp, Katie lies down in the shelter to rest before tribal council, hoping that will help stop the hangover. Landon goes into the forest to look for the hidden immunity idol while the rest of the women strategize.

Emma: So who's next? I'm guessing it's Landon?

Donna: I've thought about that, but we need Landon for challenges. More of us will be able to make the merge if we cut loose one of our own now.

Reyna: So it's Katie?

Donna: It's Katie. We'll keep Landon around for just a little while longer, then get rid of him when we have no further use for him.

I'm glad that I'm not at the bottom of the alliance after all, but this just goes to show that I can't trust Donna. She doesn't seem to have any qualms about turning on her own allies.

Feeling that the time is right to jump ship, Emma goes out looking for Landon, and finds him searching unsuccessfully for the idol.

Emma: Hey Landon. I need to talk to you for a minute.

Landon: Yeah yeah; I've been caught for the idol and you can't trust me anymore. Alright, it's out in the open. Does that cover it?

Emma: That's not at all what I was going to say. I actually wanted to form an alliance. I don't trust Donna, and I was at the bottom of the women's alliance to begin with.

Landon: Women's alliance?

Emma: On the old Kamakura, Donna formed an alliance with all the women. I was at the bottom of that until today. But I still want out.

Landon: Alright. But on one condition: We get rid of Katie first. She did terribly in the challenge, and at least Donna has some leadership skills. Besides, I don't know if we could even get the votes for Donna at this point.

Emma: Getting rid of Katie was my plan to begin with. Reyna and Donna are on board with it, too. I want them to think I'm still on their side for now.

Landon: Okay then. So it's Katie first, then Donna?

Emma: Yeah, Donna will be next.

Landon: Sounds like a plan.

I'm glad I have an ally on this tribe now, but I'm not taking Emma to the end unless she wins the final immunity challenge in a few weeks. Or unless Hannah or Kyle get blindsided at some point. Survivor's a crazy game. Anything can happen, so you've always gotta have a backup plan.

Back at the shelter, Reyna and Katie discuss the upcoming vote.

Katie: Donna told me the other day that she's considering voting for you. But I think we should get rid of Landon since, you know, he's the only person here who isn't in the alliance.

Reyna: She told you that?

Katie: Yep.

I'm not sure if Katie's telling the truth or just trying to turn me against Donna. In this situation, I think it's the latter.

Reyna: I'm not buying it, Katie. If she really wanted to keep the tribe strong and the morale higher, she'd get rid of you.

Katie: What are you insulting me for? What did I ever do to you?

Reyna: You act like being a vegan makes you better than everyone else, and you suck at challenges.

Katie: I never said that I'm better than you because I don't eat meat. Don't put words in my mouth.

Reyna: But I can tell that's what you think. You're next, Katie. Not me.

Katie: But I never did anything wrong! Why are you acting like I'm the bad guy?!

Reyna: See? No wonder you're single! You're too narcissistic to admit that you have a problem. What kind of guy's going to want to marry you if you have that attitude?

I can't believe this is happening to me. I'm a good person! What did I do to deserve being betrayed like that? *sighs* Hopefully Donna was telling me the truth when she said that she wanted Reyna gone. She's the (bleep) on this island. Not me.

The Tokugawa tribe collects their torches and head out to tribal council.

Tribal Council

The Tokugawa tribe arrives at tribal council and takes their seats.

Jeff Probst: Donna, how do you like your new tribe after the first couple of days after the tribe swap?

Donna: We're a little short on muscle in challenges due to Landon being the only man on the tribe, but otherwise I like this tribe.

Jeff Probst: Landon, do you feel threatened tonight, as the only original Ashikaga member on this new tribe?

Landon: Unless you have immunity, you should feel threatened every time you walk into Tribal Council. This is an unpredictable game. You never know when the tables are going to turn.

Jeff allows silence to linger to let Landon's words sink in.

Jeff Probst: Reyna, have any alliances formed on Tokugawa?

Reyna: Yeah. Me, Emma, Katie, and Donna.

Katie: Funny how you include me when you told me that I'm going home tonight.

Reyna does not answer her, and once again Jeff allows a brief silence to linger in the Tribal Council area.

Jeff Probst: Landon, how do you feel about being the only member of the tribe not mentioned as a part of the alliance?

Landon: It's not all that surprising, to be honest. But I have a feeling that tonight, somebody's leaving with a knife in their back.

Jeff Probst: Okay, it is time to vote. Emma, you're up.

One by one, the Tokugawa tribe gets up to cast their votes.

The moral of the story: Don't get drunk. You should probably just stop drinking after this. Just saying.

–Landon (voting for Katie)

Jeff Probst: I'll go tally the votes.

Jeff leaves to grab the voting urn, and returns a couple of minutes later.

Jeff Probst: If anyone has the hidden immunity idol and would like to play it, now would be the time to do so.

Nobody gives any indication that they have the idol.

Jeff Probst: Once the votes are read, the decision is final. The person voted out will be asked to leave the tribal council area immediately. I'll read the votes.

...First vote...Katie.

...Second vote...Katie. Two votes Katie.

...Katie. Three votes Katie.

...Sixth person voted out of Survivor: Japan - Civil War: Katie. That's four votes. That's enough. Please bring me your torch.

Tearily, Katie brings her torch to Jeff.

Jeff Probst: Katie, the tribe has spoken.

Jeff snuffs Katie's torch, officially eliminating her from the game.

Jeff Probst: It's time for you to go.

Katie leaves the tribal council area without a word to her tribemates.

Jeff Prosbt: If this vote is any indication, trust is an issue with this tribe. Grab your stuff. Head back to camp. Good night.

The remaining members of Tokugawa pick up their torches and head back to camp.

Voting Confessionals

I wanted for it to be the five of us, but that's no longer possible. Sorry, sweetie. Somebody had to go, and Landon's pretty much indispensable right now.

–Donna (voting for Katie)

Goodbye and good riddance.

–Emma (voting for Katie)

I just don't like you. I'm probably screwed, but as insignificant as it is, my vote is for you.

–Katie (voting for Reyna)

The moral of the story: Don't get drunk. You should probably just stop drinking after this. Just saying.

–Landon (voting for Katie)

Like I said earlier today: No wonder you're single!

–Reyna (voting for Katie)

Final Words

This really hurts, being betrayed by the people who call you their friends. I hope none of my former allies win this. I don't even wish them well. Screw them all.
